Integrated LED Lighting Systems for Floating Stairs in Houston, TX

Low-voltage LED routed through hollow stringers with no exposed conduit. Motion-activated and compatible with Control4, Lutron, and other smart home systems.

At Houston Floating Stairs , stair lighting that looks right is invisible when it's off and architectural when it's on. That means no surface-mounted puck lights, no visible conduit, no afterthought LED strips stuck to the underside of treads. The way to achieve that result is to route the wiring through the stringer during fabrication — not try to add it after the stair is installed.

We use hollow structural steel stringers on projects where LED integration is planned. The stringer is fabricated with wire chase routing built in — small apertures at each tread connection point allow the low-voltage wire to exit cleanly into the tread or riser space. The result is a run of light with no visible source hardware from the front view. From the underside of the tread, you see the fixture trim. From the face of the stair, you see light, not wiring.

All fixtures we specify are UL-listed for the application. Low-voltage LED systems in residential use need to be on the right driver and the right transformer capacity. Undersizing the driver causes premature LED failure. We size the driver to the actual fixture count with 20% headroom — not to the minimum the spec sheet suggests.

Motion activation is a popular option on floating stairs, particularly in homes with open-plan living areas where the stair is visible from the main living space. We use PIR sensors mounted discreetly at the top and bottom of the stair run. The sensors have adjustable sensitivity and time-delay settings that we configure during commissioning. They don't trigger from across the room when someone walks through the kitchen.

Smart home integration — Control4, Lutron Homeworks, Crestron, or simpler Lutron Caseta systems — requires coordination between our wiring design and the home automation contractor. We provide low-voltage wiring runs to the smart home panel location and specify the driver and dimmer compatibility before installation. Houston homes with existing Control4 or Lutron systems are easy to integrate. New system installs get coordinated with the AV contractor's schedule.

Integrated LED Lighting Systems — FAQ

Does the LED lighting have to be decided before fabrication starts?
Yes. Integrated LED routing requires hollow stringers with wire chase apertures built in during fabrication. If you decide you want hidden LED lighting after the stair is already installed, the only option is surface-mounted fixtures — which give a completely different result. We ask about lighting intent at the very beginning of the project so it's baked into the stringer design, not bolted on afterward.
Can the LED lighting connect to my existing Control4 or Lutron system?
Yes, with coordination. We provide low-voltage home run wiring from the stair location to your home automation panel. The LED driver we specify needs to be compatible with your specific dimmer protocol — most Control4 and Lutron Homeworks systems support 0-10V or DALI dimming, and we spec drivers accordingly. If you have a system already installed, we'll confirm compatibility before purchasing fixtures.
How does the motion activation work and can it be adjusted?
We use PIR sensors mounted at the top and bottom of the stair run. They detect motion within an adjustable cone of sensitivity — typically set to trigger when someone approaches the stair, not from across the room. Time delay (how long the lights stay on after no motion is detected) and sensitivity are adjusted during commissioning. Most clients set a 2- to 4-minute delay for stair use.
How much energy does stair LED lighting use?
A typical 12-tread stair with one LED fixture per tread draws 2 to 4 watts per fixture, putting the total stair lighting load at 24 to 48 watts. At Houston's average electricity rate, running the stair lights 4 hours per day costs roughly $2 to $5 per month. LED fixtures last 25,000 to 50,000 hours under normal conditions — so you're looking at decades of use before replacement.
Can LED lighting be added to an existing floating stair that doesn't have it?
Retrofit LED lighting is possible, but you won't get the fully integrated look of a stair that was built with it in mind. On an existing stair without hollow stringers, we can mount fixtures at the tread-riser junction with minimized surface exposure, or use recessed tread edge inserts where the tread thickness allows. It's a different detail than what you get with wiring routed through the stringer, and we'll show you both options so you can decide.
